Fine Motor Skills

This involves the development of small muscle groups in the hands and fingers and the ability to perform tasks such as pencil grip, manipulating small objects and using scissors. Occupational therapists will engage children with activities and exercises to improve these skills.

Gross Motor Skills

This includes the development of large muscle groups in the body that are used when engaging in physical activities like running, jumping and climbing. Occupational therapy aims at improving balance, coordination and strength which are important in engaging in daily activities.

Sensory Processing

This pertains to the ability to receive, interpret and respond to sensory input from the environment. OTs can work with children to identify and address sensory processing issues that may be affecting their daily participation and function.

Self-Care Skills/Activities Of Daily Living

This includes skills related to daily tasks such as bathing, dressing, feeding, grooming and toileting. OTs can provide strategies and adaptations to help children become more independent in these tasks.

Social - Emotional & Communication Skills

This includes skills related to social interaction, social skills, emotional regulation and play. OTs can provide activities and support to help a child develop play, social and communication skills.

Attention & Concentration

An OT would engage a child in activities and recommend strategies that can be used to improve attention and concentration of a child so that he or she can be functional in class and at home.
